 Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation, [se'lenakinta'nija'peres]; April 16th, 1971 - March 31st, 1995) Also known as Selena, is a famous American Tejano singer. Her contribution to fashion and music led to her being the "Queen" of Tejano music. She was among the most popular performers of the Mexican-American community of the late 20th century. Billboard magazine placed her at third place in the year 2020, on their "Greatest Latino Artists List of All Time", which was based on Latin music and Latin albums. In her selection of clothes, media outlets called her the Tejano Madonna. She also is among the most influential Latin performers ever and is believed to have helped propel the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest member of the Quintanilla family, she first appeared on the music scene as a member of the band Selena y Los Dinos, which also included her elder siblings A.B. Quintanilla Quintanilla. The singer was frequently criticized in the 1980s , and was barred from bookings at Texas venues due to her performances of Tejano music, a male-dominated genre. But her popularity increased when she was awarded the Tejano Music Award for Female Vocalist of the Year in 1987. She won repeatedly. The singer was signed to EMI Latin in 1989 and made her debut album with her own name in the same year. During that time, her brother was her primary music producer as well as songwriter.Selena has released Entre a Mi Mundo (1992) which reached number one on the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums chart for eight consecutive months. The album's popularity in the marketplace has led critics to label it the "breakthrough" album of her musical career. One of the songs, "Como la Flor" was a big hit and was her most-loved track. Live! Live! In 1994 she came out with Amor Prohibido, which became one of the top-selling Latin albums sold in the United States. It was also credited with launching Tejano music's very first commercial phase. It was one of Latin music's most well-known subgenres.
