The parents of her are Harvey Welker who is Native American and Julie Welker who is African-American. The daughter is an indigenous father and an African-American mother. Walker attended school in the Germantown Friends School in Philadelphia's Germantown region, where she was able to graduate in 1994. In 1998, she graduated in 1998 from Harvard College with a Bachelor's degree. Welker got married to John Hughes in Philadelphia, who was an acclaimed marketing director. The couple has two daughters.
